Training + Certification: Simple, Fast, and Easy

The New Rochelle YMCA is a proud provider of American Red Cross health and safety trainings. We offer the latest course curriculum in Lifeguarding, Water Safety Instruction, First Aid, CPR/AED (for both the Professional Rescuer and the lay responder), Babysitter’s Training, and more. Our course offerings are open to members and non members year round.

LIFEGUARD TRAINING

Provides entry-level participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. Successful participants earn certification that is valid for 2 years. Our Lifeguard training courses are offered in a blended learning format allowing participants to complete 7 hours worth of online content outside of class. The online course work will prepare you to attend the in-person skill sessions where you practice skills and demonstrate competency.

Prerequisites

All students must be at least 15 years of age by the last scheduled day of class. On the first day of class, all students must pass a swim evaluation consisting of:

  • 300 yard continuous swim demonstrating the ability to swim freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and sidestroke, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Recover an object from the deep end of the pool within 1 min 30 secs, demonstrating entry from the deck, submersion and recovery of the object. After recovery, swim on back with the object on chest, both hands on the object. Timer stops when both candidate and object are on deck in shallow end of the pool.

Candidates are invited to practice for the test on the lead up to the class. Candidates who fail to pass the physical exam will not be permitted to attend. We also offer a Lifeguard Prep class designed to help candidates, both swimmers and non-swimmers, prepare for the class. Candidates are required to attend all classroom sessions. Failure to attend all classroom sessions or properly demonstrate skills will result in course failure without refund. Candidates looking to recertify can receive a discount off of the class provided that they are able to provide their current certifications.
